An example of compassion

Paddy came home an hour earlier than usual and found his wife stark naked on the bed. When he asked why, she explained," I am protesting because I don't have any nice clothes to wear."

Paddy pulled open the closet door. "That' ridiculous," he said, "look in here. There is a yellow dress, a red dress, a print dress, a pantsuit…..Hi, Bill!" And he goes on, "A green dress…."

This is compassion! It is compassion to his wife, it is compassion to Bill. No jealousy, no fight, just simply,"Hi, Bill How are you?" and he goes on. He never even inquires, " What are doing in my closet?" Compassion is very understanding. It is the finest understanding that is possible to man.

Concentration & Absentmindedness

An anecdote from the book "Compassion: the Ultimate Flowering of Love" by Osho:

" I have brought a frog," said the professor of zoology beaming at his class, 'fresh from the pond, in order that we might study its outer appearance and later dissect it.'

He carefully unwrapped the package he carried and inside was a neatly prepared ham sandwich. The good professor looked at it with astonishment.

'Odd!' he said, 'I distinctly remember having eaten my lunch.

In scientific work, in scientific research, in the science lab, you need concentration. You have to concentrate on one problem and exclude everything else -- so much so that you almost become unmindful of the remaining world. The only problem that you are concentrating upon is your world.

That's why scientists become absent-minded. People who concentrate too much always become absent-minded because they don't know how to remain open to the whole world.

Why is Australia called the 'Land Down Under'?

"The land Down Under" is known for its position in the southern hemisphere, under the Equator, below many other countries on the globe. This is because when one looks at a map in the most common way, Antarctica at the 'bottom' of the page, north appears to be "up" and south; "down".

A moving video clip by Kristian Anderson

Sydneysider Kristian Anderson, 35, has been having chemotherapy since he was diagnosed with cancer in October 2009. He made the video for his wife of seven years, Rachel, as a birthday present and a thank-you for her support. The family apparently caught Oprah Winfrey's attention and she announced to give the family a cheque for $250,000 so they could "take the year off and get well" in her talk show with 6,000 audience on the Sydney Opera House forecourt this morning.
